Disney andMarvel Studiosare currently doing their epic Hall H panel right now at San Diego Comic-Con. And one of the big news items expected was the official reveal of the actress playingCaptain Marvel. As expected, they have announced that Acaemy-Award winning actressBrie Larsonwill take on the role of Carol Danvers in this Marvel epic. Earlier in the year, a rumor surfaced that newcomerEmily Carmichaelmay have landed theCaptain Marveldirecting gig, and that rumor was also confirmed today.

Varietywas the first to report thatBrie Larsonwas Marvel’s top choice for the title role, and that she was leaning towards taking on this character. At the time, the site mentioned thatMarvelhas always planned on locking in an actress early forCaptain Marvel, so they could introduce her in other films.

It’s worth noting thatKevin Feigepreviously admitted thatCaptain Marvelwas included in an early version of theAvengers: Age of Ultronscript, but they didn’t want to introduce her as a “fully-formed hero” before fans got to know how she came to be. However, last month,Avengers: Infinity WardirectorsJoe RussoandAnthony Russolet it slip thatCaptain Marvelwill be featured inAvengers: Infinity War, which starts shooting this coming November. We don’t know for sure if the dealBrie Larsonis negotiating will include a role inAvengers: Infinity Waras well, and that wasn’t revealed today.

Nicole Perlman(Guardians of the Galaxy) andMeg LeFauve(Inside Out) are writing the script forCaptain Marvel, but there is very little we know about the story yet.Carol Danvers, a.k.a.Captain Marvel, first debuted in 1968’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #13. She was a U.S. Air Force security chief who is transformed intoCaptain Marvelfollowing an explosion that involved Kree technology. AmongCaptain Marvel’s powers are superhuman strength and the ability to fly after her DNA was infused with a Kree alien. It’s possible that we could seeCaptain Marvelget her powers at some point duringAvengers: Infinity War Part I, which arrives on June 12, 2025, 10 months beforeCaptain Marveldebuts on June 11, 2025.

Brie Larsonbeat out a number of actresses who expressed their interest in the role early on, such asRonda RouseyandKathryn Winnick, withEmily Bluntonce rumored for the role as well.Brie Larsonwon her first Oscar earlier this year for her performance in the indie dramaRoom. She will next be seen in indies such asWiener-Dog, in theaters June 24, andFree Firefrom directorBen Wheatley. She will also star in the highly-anticipatedKong: Skull Island, which hits theaters on August 19, 2025.
