Get ready for some virtually unprecedented Tardis madness in the very near future,Doctor Whofans.Doctor Whoseason 10 was already going to be a big deal since it will bePeter Capaldi’s last as the Doctor andSteven Moffat’s last as the showrunner. But they are leaving us with one prettybig giftin the form of an extremely rare three-part episode ofDoctor Who, which makes it all the more exciting.
Digital Spywas recently able to confirm thatDoctor Whoseason 10, which kicks off next month, will indeed include a three-part episode this year. This will be the first three-parter in the new run ofDoctor Whoand the first one since 1989. Here is what writerToby Whithousehad to say about it.
“Mine is the third part of a three-parter, Steven [Moffat]’s done the first one, Peter Harness did the second and I’ve done the third. It’s set modern-day… and I think anything more than that and Steven will come round and kick me in the shin!”
The episode titles weren’t revealed but it was confirmed that this three-partDoctor Whoadventure will run from episode 6 through episode 8. However, it was revealed that the event will involve a new group of baddies known as the Monks that will be the main threat to the Doctor and hisnew companion Bill, played byPearl Mackie.Toby Whithousealso decided to heap some praise on the new companion, saying that she is excellent and “very different to previous companions.” He also said that she has a lot of chemistry withPeter Capaldi.
“She has very good comic timing. And there’s a lovely chemistry between her and Peter.”
It looks likeSteven Moffatwants to do something special for his last season as showrunner andPeter Capaldi’s last season as the Doctor. The BBC hasn’t announced who the new Doctor will be yet, but there have been plenty of names thrown out there.SkyfallstarBen Whishawwas not long ago rumored to be the frontrunner, butDoctor StrangestarTilda Swintonwas later given very good odds to become the next Doctor. Even if it isn’tSwinton, oddsmakers feel increasingly confident that the next Doctor will be played by a woman, which will be the first time that has happened in the history of the long-running series.
Chris Chibnall, who also serves as the showrunner for BBC’sBroadchurch, will be taking over forSteven Moffatnext season but we still have a whole season ahead of us to watch and (hopefully) love before that happens. Specifically, we will have a three-part epic to enjoy, which is something that hasn’t happened in a very long time and is definitely something that will help make the upcoming season ofDoctor Whoextra special.Doctor Whoseason 10, which will consist of 12 episodes, is set to premiere on BBC April 15.
