Upon arrival in the Dark World inDragon Quest HD-2D Remake, the hero learns that to defeat the Lord of the Underworld, they will need to gather some specific powerful items. The Hero’s Shield is one such item, and unlike many other important items, getting this item is simply of matter of going to a dungeon and finding a treasure box. It sounds simple enough, but with many things that sound easy there is always a catch. It may be a straight forward quest, but it does offer a certain amount of challenge.
Review: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
Is HD-2D the key to revitalize Dragon Quest III or should it have stayed in the past?
Talontear Tunnel
Traveling northwest of Tantegel, the party will eventually stumble upon a cave. This is Talontear Tunnel. It is a relatively small dungeon, but it is one that can easily bring the hero’s journey to an end. The Hero’s shield is located in a room with a few other treasure boxes. To make it to the room, the party will need to travel to the southeast corner of the first floor and then work their way back to the northwest part of the lower level. From there, they can enter the treasure room and go to the treasure box at the back of the narrow path. After the Hero’s Shield has been acquired, then it’s time to march back out the way they came, and sadly Evac isn’t an option.
Talontear Tunnel is full of powerful monsters, and what makes it even more difficult is magic cannot be used in this dungeon. Weapons that function as items, such as the Staff of Sentencing, still work, so that is one way to work around this limitation. Non-magical abilities still work, so having a Monster Wrangler, Martial Artist or Warrior in the party can be useful, since their abilities can speed up the battle process. Monster Pile-On is a particularly useful skill inTalontear Tunnel. The player might even get lucky and have one of the trolls drop a Stormlord’s Sword, which unleashes a powerful fire attack when used as an item. Besides, depending on how quickly the player gets there, the sword could be an upgrade to a party member’s regular weapon. Stocking up on healing items is also highly suggested.

Now that the player has overcome Talontear Tunnel, they can take advantage of the Hero’s Shield while they continue their adventure to other more dangerous places. The challenges ahead are greater with more powerful monsters, but at least the party will be able to cast their spells in these scenarios.
