Apple used part of its Worldwide Developers Conference, which took place today, to unveilFoundation. The upcoming Apple TV+ show is based on the award-winning novels by Isaac Asimov and it looks massive in scope. Apple’s streaming platform isn’t even a year old and they are still looking for their big hit. While just looking at the trailer, it seems they could very well have their ownGame of Thronesunder their belts if everything goes according to plan.
TheFoundationseries chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.Isaac Asimov’s source materialwas a great influence on Frank Herbert’sDuneand George Lucas’Star Wars, and one can already see some visual similarities when looking at the brief bit of footage. Executive producer David S. Goyer is shown at the beginning of the trailer talking about how long people have tried to getFoundationmade, which also puts a lot of pressure on the show.
Foundationstars SAG Award-winner andEmmy-nominee Jared Harrisas Hari Seldon, Lee Pace as Brother Day, Lou Llobell as Gaal, Leah Harvey as Salvor, Laura Birn as Demerzel, Terrence Mann as Brother Dusk, and Cassian Bilton as play Brother Dawn. Apple originally announced the series back in 2018 and they have been hard at work trying to get it made, reportedly dropping a lot of money into it at the same time.
Production onFoundationwas halted earlier this year and it’s unclear when the cast and crew will be getting back to work. With that being said, there currently is no official premiere date, though many were thinking early 2021 would be the right time. With production taking a breather, we may be looking at a premiere much later, which will put even more added pressure on the series. People have attempted to bringFoundationto the big and small screen for decades now, and much like Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming big screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’sDune, there are fans who will be watching it very closely to see how it compares with the source material.Foundationhas the benefit of being a series, so they should be able to get a lot of the books into the show.
