Spy x Familyis now a beloved global phenomenon that stands as an example of a creative idea with brilliant execution. Not only is the series a delight to watch, but it is also a testament to the importance of perseverance in the manga industry.

Tatsuya Endo’s creation blends aspects of espionage, espers, comedy, and a whole lot of heartfelt moments, captivating readers and viewers alike. Yet, behind this sweet success and seemingly innocent work lies a difficult journey for its creator.
Endo, a mangaka known for his signature character designs and ability to seamlessly shift between the scenes and genres, had endured years of disillusionment before finding his stride withSpy x Family. It can be called a terrible case of writer’s block that extended up to a decade.

Exploring Loid’s past was hard on Tatsuya Endo
Tatsuya Endo might seem like a cheerful mangaka since his series,Spy x Family, is known for seamlessly blending comedy, action, and heartfelt storytelling.
However,in a candid interviewduring a discussion on MISSION REPORT:220409-0625, Endo disclosed that delving into protagonist and ultimate spy Loid Forger’s past took a significant emotional and physical toll on him, leading to him choosing a temporary shift towards a more lighthearted and relaxing chapters.

I made that Short Mission after the arc about Loid’s past left me an emotional wreck. I just wanted to do something that wouldn’t cause me a lot of mental or physical strain.
Endo recounted how crafting the arc focused on Loid’s past left him shattered as the process of exploring serious themes hadalready been haunting himduring the ten years of downward dive in his writing.

Loid Could Have Almost Abandoned Spy x Family’s Main Mission for Selfish Reasons Until One Character Changed His Mind
To write the protagonist’s traumatic history required Endo to immerse himself deeply. This immersion had considerable repercussions on his health and well-being, both mentally and physically.
Alternating emotionally draining and light-hearted arcs helped Endo balance the story
Endos said that he initially aimed to create content that wouldn’t cause him significant strain and would sell well. However, as the manga grew popular, the demands ofaccurately portraying Loid’s backstorywere piling up.
Moreover, it was needed to lay a solid base for the story. During COVID times, writing adraining arc affected Endo adversely.

Having to think about serious issues for a long time always has considerable repercussions for me. And then there was the timing of that arc, considering what was going on in the world. And finally, there was simply the physical toll that my schedule had been taking on me.
Recognizing the need for a shift, both for himself and the fans, Endo decided to follow the intense arc with a “Short Mission” that was much more light-hearted and filled with comedy and a warm tone.
Take Notes Goku: Spy x Family’s Loid Forger Is Better at Being a Fake Father Than Goku Is at Being a Real One
While exploring deep and meaningful narratives enriches the series, it also demands a significant emotional investment from the creator and that is why alternating stressful and lighthearted arcs is a great strategy.
