TheMinecraftmovie adaptation in the works withJason Momoaat Warner Bros. now has an official release date following years of spinning its wheels in development hell. On Wednesday, it was announced (viaDeadline) that the film has been dated for a theatrical premiere on June 09, 2025, coming just under two years from now. That date had previously been booked by Warner Bros. for an unnamed movie, now revealed to beMinecraft.
There’s very little that has been revealed about theMinecraftfilm. Last year, it was reported thatMomoa was officially set to starin the film, described as a live-action adaptation of the popular crafting game. Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) is also on board to direct. Reportedly, Mary Parent and Roy Lee are producing alongside Mojang Studios' Lydia Winters and Vu Bui; late producer Jill Messick will be given a posthumous credit. Jon Berg, Cale Boyter, and Jon Spaihts are executive producing.

GivingMinecraftan official premiere date gets the project closer than ever to actually getting released after some previous false starts. Rob McElhenney (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) was once planning to direct aMinecraftmovie that wound up falling through. There have also been reports of Peter Sollett (Freeheld) potentially directing while Steve Carell had been wanted for a starring role, but the project just couldn’t make its way out of development hell.

Move Aside Mario and Sonic, Minecraft Will Become a Feature Film
Perhaps the success of video game adaptations in more recent years have given theMinecraftadaptation the momentum it needs to get its production started. These kinds of films have proven to perform much more well these days compared to years ago, as seen withDetective Pikachu,Mortal Kombat, and theSonic the Hedgehogmovies. HBO has also recently found big success with the series adaptation ofThe Last of Us. As one of the most popular and highest-selling video games ever, it may have been a matter of time before theMinecraftmovie finally got its green light.
Minecraftwill be released on June 26, 2025. Meanwhile, the studio has also moved a release date for another one of its films starring Momoa.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdomwas set to premiere in theaters on Dec. 25 of this year, but it’s now been moved up five days sooner, set to drop on Wednesday, Dec. 20. The movie may be facing some stiff competition from the filmgoing crowd as it will be opening against Gil Kenan’sGhostbusters: Afterlifesequel.
