While it’s certainly a tough game, PEAK is generally fairly lighthearted in tone. This makes the mysterious Scoutmaster and the horrific creature he warped into all the more surprising. If you want to meet something genuinely scary, the Mentorship Badge is for you.
This guide will discuss how exactly the Mentorship Badge is earned, some of the mechanics behind how you meet the Scoutmaster, andsome general adviceto make earning the badge safer.

The badge this article discusses, time of writing, seems to have bugs associated with it. These will be mentioned when relevant but may be patched at a later date.

The Basics of the Mentorship Badge
The Mentorship Badge’s requirement reads “Have a 1-on-1 with the Scoutmaster” which hints at its requirements but can still cause some confusion, especially because the badge seems to either be bugged or have a strange, hidden requirement discussed later in this section.
Core to understanding this badge is first knowing that PEAK contains a rarely encountered enemy called the Scoutmaster.A long-limbed skeleton with an animal face dressed in a scoutmaster uniform, this creature seems to be the final fate of Scoutmaster Myres, whose journal pages you can find near the game’s campfires (if they don’t bug out and fail to spawn). The Scoutmaster is very dangerous and cannot be killed, although he will eventually leave if you can survive him long enough. Importantly, the Scoutmaster only tends to target a single climber, whose vision will get obscured by moderate static to indicate something sinister is seeking them out.

This badge is earned by encountering the Scoutmaster. Some sources will claim you must survive the encounter, but this didn’t seem to be true in testing. What’s odd is that it seems like only a server’s host is ever able to earn this badge at the time of writing, which seems strange enough that it’s likely unintentional, especially because he doesn’t need to target the host for them to earn the badge. If he shows up and targets any climber, it seems like the host is given the badge if they don’t already have it and nobody else.
Knowing all the above, earning this badge actually isn’t very difficult (even assuming you’re not usingone of several modsto make the game easier overall), although the Scoutmaster can easily kill a climber (or multiple, if other people get too close) if his chosen target can’t avoid him. You mostly just need to know how to consistently spawn him and then ensure you’re hosting the server.

Earning this badge gets you a pair of inverse eyes, much like those of the Scoutmaster. If you play on Steam, you also get an achievement.
Understanding the Scoutmaster
Spawning the Scoutmaster is fairly easy, especially in multiplayer. He can appear in one of two ways:
Once one of his summoning conditions has been met, his target’s vision will gain a static filter over it, making it a bit harder to see. The Scoutmaster will then spawn a decent distance away, usually somewhere nobody can see, and begin to climb towards his target. He is very persistent, unkillable, and loudly rattles when near. He is essentially immune to all forms of forced movement and slowdown. Unlike the players, he appears to have no stamina; he just climbs whenever necessary to beeline towards his target. Importantly, he cannot climb ropes, vines, and similar interactables.

Once in melee range, the Scoutmaster will grab his target and throw them with great force, often tossing them far down the mountain and dealing enough fall damage to knock them out. He can similarly grab other climbers who get too close, despite not actively targeting them.
Depending on how he has spawned, he seems to have different behaviors, determining what will cause him to leave:
Scoutmaster’s Bugle
If summoned by the Scoutmaster’s Bugle, the Scoutmaster is on a timer. His target must survive for what seems to be about two minutes in order for him to leave. Otherwise, he will only start to leave if his target is knocked unconscious. If an unconscious target is brought back to consciousness while he is still leaving, he will immediately target them again. For this reason, ensure to wait for him to vanish before reviving an ally he had targeted.
Abandoning Fellow Climbers
If summoned by getting too far from other climbers, the Scoutmaster isn’t on any timer. Instead, he seems to be focused on your distance from other climbers. As long as they remain far awayand are still alive, he will pursue his target. He will only leave if his target is no longer sufficiently far from other living climbers, or if his target loses consciousness. Unlike with the bugle, the Scoutmaster doesn’t seem to immediately attack a target that is revived while he is leaving; he just continues to leave.
There seems to be a cooldown period after the Scoutmaster leaves, where he won’t immediately appear again even if his summon conditions are otherwise met. However, using the bugle during this period will still cause him to attackeventually, he’ll just wait until the cooldown period is over and then immediately spawn again.
Surviving the Scoutmaster
Once he appears, the Scoutmaster is a major threat. He can climb faster than players can and is overall more mobile. He seems to start at a normal (although stillrelativelyfast) speed and then eventually speed up, getting oppressively fast in a way that’s much harder to deal with. However, he has some notable weaknesses:
With the above in mind, don’t attempt to outdistance the Scoutmaster too much. If you get too far, he will just teleport to be closer to his target.
A somewhat sad bit of trivia is that Scoutmaster Myres emphasizes in the survival book he wrote (which you’re able to find near the beginning of the game) not to abandon your fellow climbers. It seems even the undead Scoutmaster continues to carry the import of this belief with him, seemingly hunting climbers who specifically abandon their friends rather than killing climbers arbitrarily.
