With an unwavering popularity that spans generations, it’s no surprise manyMinecraftfans highly anticipated A Minecraft Movie. As is the case with many video game film adaptations, however, some liberties were taken.

8 Best Video Game Movie Adaptations

Recent video game adaptation successes include Super Mario Bros, but which ones stand out in a sea of Postals and Warcrafts?

Minecraft is such a fantastical world, and with thefreedom to build and create, it can look different for every player. The film puts a spin on certain features or adds completely new ones that never existed in the game.

7No Respawn Allowed

There Are No Second Chances Here

It’s heavily implied that if you die in A Minecraft Movie, it’s over for you. You won’t wake up in bed and have to go back out there searching for your loot. With how seriously everyone takes the idea of being careful, it’s hinted that the film lacks the respawn ability used in the game.

It does raise the stakes somewhat for our characters, but it would also have been entertaining to witness some of them “die” and respawn much like the characters did in the Jumanji remake.

6Bigger Portals

A Portal Fit for Everyone

In terms of appearance in the game, Nether portals don’t look all that interesting. They’re vital for travel, but otherwise, their design is based more on utility than anything else. Theydoresemble the game quite a bit in A Minecraft Movie, but the standout feature is that they’re larger.

A bigger Nether portal in the film isn’t something you’d miss. It’s a creative change from the game that works out for the better. The movie should be larger than life and creating oversized portals is a good step in that direction.

5The Endermen Location

Not Where They’re Supposed to Be

Although Endermen spawn in all three dimensions in the game, what they don’t do is spawn in the Woodland Mansion. One of themost famous locations in Minecraft, the Woodland Mansion has a prominent role in the film. We learn that threats like the Vindicators are inside, which is per usual like in the game. What’s surprising is that Endermen also lurk in the Mansion.

Our characters are warned about the Endermen, but fans of the game also know that you don’t generally see them in the Mansion. Other Overworld monsters can roam inside from time to time, but that’s not really the case for our dark, mysterious mob. It does seem like an interesting way to add another layer of tension in the film, though.

4Creating Original Items

No Blueprints or Recipes Needed

If you’re not building something in Minecraft, are you really playing it? The creation of weapons, items, etc. is the backbone of the game. Which is why A Minecraft Movie having the ability to make original items without a blueprint stands out.

First revealed in the trailers, we witness Jason Momoa’s character crafting buckets from random scraps. Additionally, in the film, Henry creates things from items he brought from Earth. If only it were this easy to build anything you’d like in the game. But the film does sport many familiar items fans can appreciate like the diamond armor.

3Nether Mobs Everywhere

The Overworld Isn’t Safe

One of the most obvious differences between A Minecraft Movie and the game deals with the Nether mobs. The big showdown with them sees them invading the Overworld. What’s exciting is that you do get to see quite a few mobs including Piglins. But getting them into the Overworld requires player interaction. In the film, they just appear.

Every Mob You Can Tame as a Pet in Minecraft

Ever wanted a cute and blocky companion in Minecraft? These are the best mobs you can tame.

It’s yet another example of the creative liberties the movie took that makes sense. Similar to the Endermen in Woodland Mansion, having Nether mobs rush the Overworld is a fitting way to add in more action in the main setting rather than have the characters continually venture into the Nether.

2Steve’s Appearance

Someone Has Certainly Aged

Steve never had an iconic look, but as essentially the face for Minecraft, he’s instantly recognizable. So, when Jack Black arrived on screen with the bright blue shirt and jeans, it was clear who he was meant to be. Even so, there were also obvious changes in the film from his game counterpart.

Gone is his simple goatee. Now, Steve boasts a full, mostly gray, beard. Even his hair is longer. Granted, we do see Steve closer to his game look in the brief flashback. But it’s still a bit jarring to witness this older version of Steve throughout most of the movie.

1Malgosha’s Existence

A New Enemy

In A Minecraft Movie, Malgosha is the main antagonist. A piglin from the Nether, she despises creativity, even going so far as to kill one of her own because of it. But her appearance leaves players scratching their heads because she doesn’t exist in the game.

At least, she didn’t before they decided to put the add-on pack into the game that included characters from the film. Other than that, she’s a completely original enemy. Not that there’s anything wrong with creating original bad guys. It’s just one more thing that separates the game from the movie.
