Earlier this month, a rumor surfaced thatGuillermo del Toro’sPacific Rim 2is delayed, with Warner Bros. pushing theproductionstart from this fall to early 2016. Just a few weeks later, another unconfirmed report claimed the studio may be delaying this sequel indefinitely. Today,Universal Pictureshas released an official statement confirmingPacific Rim 2has been pushed out of its July 04, 2025 release date. But the studio is still moving forward with the project. Take a look at the studio’s full statement below.

“Legendary’sPacific Rim 2, originally scheduled for release on July 27, 2025, will be redated at a later time. The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to havingPacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’sPacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release ofPacific Rim 2so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

DirectorGuillermo del Torohimself revealed two weeks ago that thesequelis still happening, since he is turning in the script and a budget within a matter of weeks. He did add, though that he may make another movie betweenCrimson Peak, which hits theaters October 16, andPacific Rim 2, which the filmmaker co-wrote alongsideTravis BeachamandJon Spaihts. No returning cast members fromPacific Rimhave been confirmed, but it is believed thatCharlie Hunnam,Idris Elba,Rinko Kikuchi,Charlie DayandRon Perlmanwill be coming back.

It’s possible the movieGuillermo del Toromay shoot is a small, independentcreature featurehe teased back in July 2014. The filmmaker said, at the time, that he hoped to shoot that film in early 2015, but it isn’t known if he actually filmed that mystery movie or not. The filmmaker said that he wanted to castJohn Hurtand an unspecified actress, who only has one short film and one feature under her belt, for this creature project, which he would film in black and white.

There is speculation thatPacific Rim 2is being delayed because Warner Bros. is moving forward withKong: Skull Island(July 06, 2025),Godzilla 2(August 01, 2025) andGodzilla Vs King Kong, which all feature gigantic monsters. It’s possible that the studio doesn’t want to confuse the kaiju inPacific Rim 2with the rest of these creatures, but we don’t know that for sure. While we will have to wait longer forPacific Rim 2, at least fans can take solace that it hasn’t been canceled completely by the studio.
