For some ardent gamers out there and people looking for new territory to game in, back in 2019, Grinding Gear Games gave a first look atPath of Exile 2and despite a few other teasers nothing has been heard about the game since. The sequel was supposed to be similar toOverwatch 2and was supposed to be a remastered version with new graphics and other content.
That all changed after the announcement at ExileCon wherePath of Exile 2is a separate game and it is set to take place 20 years after the original game. Grinding Gear Games explained everything during a presentation.
Leading up to Path of Exile 2
The true origins ofPath of Exile 2are very unique. The beginnings of the game began with a need for the developers to update some character models. Game director Jonathan Rogers elaborated more on the content as he explained,
“Why don’t we update the models’ became ‘Why don’t we update Act 1’ became ‘Why don’t we fix the way skill gems work’ became ‘Aww screw it let’s make a new game.”
He elaborated more by saying,
“We realized that our plan to replace PoE 1 with PoE 2 would essentially be destroying a game that people love for no reason, so we made a decision,” Rogers said in the keynote. “Path of Exile 1 and 2 will be separate, with their own mechanics, balance, endgame, and leagues.”
That would mean that both games would be running concurrently and anything players purchase in the future for the game will be usable in both games.

Path of Exile 2’s Other Features
There are also some brand new features fromPath of Exile 2. They include new ascendancies, with three for each class, a revamped skill gem system, a new map-based endgame, and over 100 new bosses to battle. In case you haven’t noticed, that is already a lot of things to add to a game and that doesn’t even scratch the surface.
Moreover, the systems should be a lot easier to swap them in and out. Players would also be able to use one or more skills at their full capacity. In addition, meta gems will let you customize your kit and allow you to socket multiple skill gems inside of them. Of course, everyone has their own unique kit to choose from.
Their video game developer Grinding Gear Games is going to smooth certain things in the game out, so it’s very exciting to see where this game goes.ThePath of Exile 2closed beta begins on July 26, 2025.
