As one of Gearbox’s key figures,Pitchfordis fully committed to the promotional effort. This time, he has shed light on one of the game’s more engaging elements: itscollectibles.

Over 200 Hidden Collectibles Across Kairos

In a detailedthread onX/Twitter,Pitchford addressed a common challenge in open-world design:how to meaningfully populate large maps.

“I challenged Andrew Reiner, who’s been at Game Informer for 30 years, to find inaccessible places in the game — areas that feel like untouched territory,” Pitchford explained.

But visual appeal alone wasn’t enough. The developers wanted toincentivize exploration, and the best way to do that was throughcollectibles.

There areover 200 hidden collectiblesinBorderlands 4.

These needed to bevisually recognizablewhile alsotied to the game’s lore, especially events fromBorderlands 3.

“Someone on Elpis had a box full of these toys, and after the cataclysm, they ended up scattered across Kairos,” Pitchford says.

Naturally, these areMarcus figurines, featuring the iconic arms dealer from the earlier games.

“With them, we started crafting small stories.”

Pitchford shared examples — such as oneMarcus figure left on a dead person’s desk, and anothergazing at a painting.

“In total, there are over 200 Marcus dolls hidden across Kairos, and most players will never see them all,” he adds.

“Some will find a few, and only a very small number will explore the entire map to find every last one.”

Pitchford Shares a Full Collectible Map — And Sparks Controversy

To help those aiming for 100% completion, Pitchford also published afull map showing every doll location— a move that didn’t sit well with some fans.

True to form,Pitchford can’t seem to go a day without clashing with parts of the player base, though in this case, many agree he’s in the right.

Previously, he sparked controversy forstrongly defending the game’s high price, which, fortunately, will stay at$69.99.
