Risk of Rain Returns - Combat Perfected

A Risky Rain

The Risk of Rain Returns release will introduce two new Survivors who will be joining the game’s existing Roster. This means that the game’s original 12 will now grow to 14. Survivors in RIsk of Rain have their unique playstyles, ranging from basic gunners in the form of the Commando or something like the advanced CHEF robot.

Each Survivor also has three abilities in addition to their basic attack. However, Risk of Rain Returns will be introducing alternate abilities that players can unlock, giving us even more options in combat.

Risk of Rain Returns - Alternate Skills to Unlock

New heroes include the Pilot and the Drifter, both of which introduce quite a unique spin on things.

A Drifty Drifter

Our Drifter character is a brawler who was unlucky enough to end up on the hazardous planet that the game takes place. She has a unique resource visible only to her called Scrap - which is essentially just trash that the Drifter generated by hitting her foes with her massively overpacked backpack.

The Drifter uses Scrap to enhance her two other abilities. The first of which is called Cleanup, which allows the Drifter to use all the accumulated garbage as a deadly dirty projectile - one that has some explosive effect.

The Drifter Survivor

Otherwise, the Drifter in Risk of Rain Returns can find value in garbage by using Salvage. She can create powerful items that can temporarily buff the Drifter or any ally that might be lucky enough to grab them.

Take to the Skies

Next up is the Pilot character, who thrives on aerial combat. This character makes use of a powerful short-range burst with their Clusterfire ability. Essentially this is a three-shot burst attack that can also go through enemies, damaging anything unfortunate enough to line up perfectly with your shot.

Since we’re pilots, this Risk of Rain Returns character can also take to the skies offensively or defensively. If you’ve picked off more than you can choose, the Pilot can perform a Rapid Deployment and jump into the air. He will then release his parachute to be able to navigate their landing much easier.

The Pilot Survivor

The Pilot can even fire while in the air with their attack, Target Acquired. This will shoot enemies diagonally depending on your current direction. If you’re on the ground, this will hit enemies who are up in the air instead. You can also do an Airstrike that shoots anything below you.

The Risk of Rain Returns

For those unfamiliar with Risk of Rain, the game is a sidescrolling roguelite that has players choose a survivor who has some unique abilities. Players battle through the dangerous Petrichor V, which has a deadly menagerie of monsters who are all out to snack on your tasty innards.

As players battle through the landscape, they find various powerups that enhance their stats in different ways, provide them with more attacks, or give them some powerful elemental abilities. The fun of the game comes from all the unique and varied combinations that you can mix and match, making each run truly unique. For example, you can pick up a Ukelele that gives you a chain lightning attack, or a Toxic Worm that makes you poisonous to everything you touch.

Risk of Rain Returns - Items to Collect and Select

Risk of Rain (and Risk of Rain Returns) can be played either solo or co-op with up to four players. Multiplayer can be done either online or via couch co-op, which is always a welcome addition (bring back the LAN parties!).
