Last month, we reported that Oscar winnerMatthew McConaugheyturned down the villain role inGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, while the highly-anticipated sequel added its first new cast memberPom Klementieff, who is reportedly playing Mantis. Pre-production is currently under way in Atlanta, as writer-directorJames Gunnprepares to start principal photography early next year. One of the biggest questions swirling around this superhero sequel is the identity ofStar Lord’s (Chris Pratt) father, which will be revealed in the movie. All we know for sure is that it won’t be the same character as it was in the comics, J’son. Today, we have a new rumor fromHeroic Hollywood, which has revealed the identity of Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s father. Be warned, there will be potential SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.
The site has revealed, through four independent sources, that Star-Lord’s father is none other that the first Captain Marvel, not Carol Danvers, but Mar-Vell, who first appeared in Marvel Super-Heroes #12 in December 1967. In theMarvelComics, Mar-Vell was sent to Earth by his Kree commanding officer Colonel Yon-Rogg, to determine whether or not the human race posed a threat to the Kree. In theGuardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord’s father was described as an angel, composed of light, who is part of a race that the Nova Corps hasn’t seen in several years.Heroic Hollywoodspeculates thatMarvelmay be doing some serious tweaking to Mar-Vell’s comic book back story, to fit him into the MCU.
You may recall that Carol Danvers, who is getting her own stand aloneCaptain Marvelmovie in 2019, was originally set to be introduced inAvengers: Age of Ultron. ProducerKevin Feigerevealed after the release that this plan was scrapped because they didn’t want to introduce her before fans knew “how she came to be.” In the comics,Carol Danversactually gets her powers from Mar-Vell, after both Carol and Mar-Vell were caught in the explosion of a Kree Pscyche-Magneton device, which caused her DNA to become fused with Mar-Vell’s, causing a perfect hybrid of Kree and human genes.
If this rumor is true, it’s possible that the introduction of Mar-Vell inGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2may be leading up to an appearance inCaptain Marvel, where he could play a significant role in her origin story. The site also speculates that Mar-Vell is actually the role thatMatthew McConaugheyturned down, since the studio most likely wanted to secure the actor for multiple appearances, instead of for “one-off villain.” Since we never learned exactly what roleMatthew McConaugheywas offered, it isn’t known if he was up for Mar-Vell or not.
Since, in the comics, Mar-Vell isn’t an angel composed of light, the site also speculates thatMarvelwill be altering his origins, turning him into one of theInhumans. The site speculates thatMarvelwants theInhumansto be their nextX-Men, and even though we still have four years until theInhumansmovie arrives in July 2019, theInhumansrace as a whole have already been set up onMarvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.None of this has been confirmed quite yet, but the site also mentions that they expect denials from theMarvelcamp. Do you think Star-Lord’s father could be Mar-Vell?
