James Gunnrecently celebrated a major milestone as the first trailer forSupermanamassed an incredible 250 million views across all platforms. This has seen it soaring above all other DC and Warner Bros. trailers as the most-watched in their history, and proven thatGunn’s first movie in charge of the new DCUis going to draw a lot of attention next summer. However, as impressive as the volume is, it cannot hide the fact that, for some reason, DC movies still cannot manage to get the upper hand over the trailers of Marvel Studios.

There is no doubt thatSupermanwill be one of the biggest movies in the last 20 years for Warner Bros. Discovery and their newly formed DC Studios branch. Providing a reset to the comic book franchise after the disappointing end of the DCEU,Supermanwill cut a very different take on the Kryptonian compared to Zack Snyder’sMan of Steel. While this will clearly see the film getting a lot of attention from Snyder fans (prepare forcontinuous Henry Cavill comparisons), it will also have many curious over how Gunn’s jam-packed, hero-heavy universe will bring something new to the superhero party. That is exactly what it needs to do to give the DCU a strong start next year.

James Gunn’s DCU Has a Great Start But Proves an Undeniable Truth

WhileSuperman’s incredible trailermilestone is the most positive sign yet that Gunn is on track to guide the DCU to success, it also highlights the continued gap between the best of DC and the biggest of Marvel Studios. 250 million views (and counting) is nothing to be balked at, but still pales in comparison to trailers for Marvel epics likeSpider-Man: No Way HomeandDeadpool & Wolverine, which both drew in more than 350 million views in the first 24 hours.

However, it is hard to gauge these in the same way asSuperman, as both trailers came with the instant boost of being shown during the Super Bowl. However, theAvengers: Endgametrailer, which was released around this time in 2018, scored 289 million views in the first 24 hours, and probably came with the same level of investment as many people have in the kick-off of the new DC franchise.

“Perhaps what he’s pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity.”

Despite the comparisons,Supermanreaching 250 million views is a huge win for DC Studios, and the important test will come when the film debuts in cinemas on July 11. Only then will we see whether a man – and a dog – can really fly.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.' rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”
