Welcome to theTop 5 Upcoming RPGs of April 2020! In this series we highlight theTop 5 RPGsfor the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.
Top 5 Upcoming RPGs of April 2020
Last month’s top spot went to the Yokai Action-RPGNioh 2, which challenged players to take on many demons using their samurai skills. There were also a number of strategy type titles in our Top 5. This month however is more of a mix of genres, with a well known universe stepping into a more story-driven narrative with dungeon crawling, and a couple of remakes finally making their way out into world. Without further ado, let’s get into the month of April 2020!
Honorable Mention: Fallout 76 Wastelanders
Release Date: April 14th

The Wastelander update is quite a significant update to the world ofFallout 76because it is meant to introduce human NPCs which were not part of its launch. The online multiplayer didn’t come with these NPCs due to its post-apocalyptic nature, instead players could learn about the events that proceeded by listening to a number ofHolotapes, that were dotted around theWild Appalachiaand interactions came from meeting other players in the game.
The Wastelanders will introduce human NPCs to Fallout 76 as well as an array dialogue options. These are fully voiced NPCs that will offer new missions and rewards. The expansion is free to all those who own Fallout 76 adding some much needed human life to the game. It also brings new factions, locations, companions with options to romance and more.

Dread Nautical is a horror themed tactical turn-based RPG set at sea. As a member of a luxury cruise liner called the Hope, mysterious forces are at work…monstrous ones that are inflicted with the supernatural. Suddenly your vacation has become really dangerous, and it’s up to you to survive.
Players will explore a randomly generated ship. The gameplay features roguelike elements with turn-based combat, where you choose one of four playable characters to venture the ship with and meet other survivors along the way. These survivors can join your party, you can plan your escape with choosing your attacks and skill upgrades. Track down what you need to survive including food and other resources. The artstyle is done in a cartoon-inspired style, but with a dark and looming atmosphere.

Originally Dread Nautical launched on Apple TV and iOS devices, but is coming to a range of platforms this April.
Dread Nauticalwill launch on April 29th for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC via the Epic Games Store.

4. Trials of Mana
The world has been cast into darkness since the Goddess of Mana put forth her Sword of Mana to slay the eight Benevodons, monsters of pure carnage. Able to seal these horrors in eight Mana stones, the world was brought back from the edge of destruction. Now that the world is at peace, the Goddess is in a weakened state, so turns herself into a tree, falling into a deep slumber. But evil forces are trying to free Benevodons from their shackles. Mana is now fading away and the tree is beginning to waste away.
Trials of Mana is the remake of the original SNES version which released in Japan in 1995 known as Seiken Densetsu 3. The story follows an interwoven tale with intertwined destinies. Depending on which character you choose to play and companions, will unravel an adventure.

This remake gives Trials of Mana a new 3D updated look, adding new mechanics, character voice over support and a different gameplay view from the original top down. It also includes a new class, reconstructed levelling system as well as more active battles.

3. Minecraft Dungeons

Minecraft Dungeons follows the story of a lone Illager, who is outcast from society. He wanders the land only to stumble upon the Orb of Dominance. Now with this great power, he has become corrupted with evil and has a thirst for vengeance to takeover the Overworld. The Illagers start to invade towns, crushing them if they disobeyed them. It is down to a few valiant heroes to rise up and fight back the evil.
The game is a dungeon crawler that will include a mix of Minecraft monsters and figures that fans know and love. Take on the cubed world in single player mode or with friends, with up to four in a group. Using Minecraft’s blocky visuals that has made it famous, expect RPG elements with questing against the villainous Arch-Illager and plenty of treasure to discover.
Combat is in real-time, where you will need to choose weapons, gear and enchantments. Your abilities will rely on the gear you equip, with both ranged and melee weapons at your disposal. Expect procedurally generated dungeons, many biomes to explore, with plenty of spiders and skeletons to encounter.
Minecraft Dungeonsis expected to release on Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC and Switch this April, but the original release window may be delayed due to the current situation. [UPDATE - Delayed to May 26th]
2. Hellpoint
Release Date: April 16th [UPDATE - Delayed to Q2 2020]
Developer: Cradle Games
Set aboard a state of the art ship the Irid Nova, once home to the mega-colony Arcology, this space station use to accommodate over 100,000 souls. Then the Merge took place, turning theIrid Novainto a cemetery. Now it is infested with the Parasites and the Daemonium, who consumed the dead.
This challengingAction-RPGdefinitely lives up to its title’s name, in more ways than one. Hellpoint places players in an isolated space station where they will need to explore different areas, while encountering a number of hellishenemiesthat are the stuff of nightmares. There are also a variety of gruesome ways to die to some fearsome and challengingbosses.
Hellpoint takes inspiration fromDark Soulsand Dead Space, as well as movies such as Event Horizon and Hellraiser. So if you put all of those together, you can only imagine what kind of time you’re in for…it’s bound to be hellish!
Hellpointwill be releasing on April 13th on Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC. [UPDATE - Delayed to Q2 2020]
1. Final Fantasy VII Remake
Release Date: April 10th

This month’s top spot goes to the highly anticipated title from Square Enix, Final Fantasy VII Remake. The original title was released nearly 23 years ago, it’s been quite the wait for the game but it’s finally here this April.
Final Fantasy VII Remakeis a reimagining of the original, mixing command-based combat with real-time action. The title sets to stay true to the original narrative but there will be some new additions. It follows the tale of Cloud Strife, a former Shinra soldier who joins the Avalanche as a mercenary, to help stop the company from draining the planet of its life energy.
Fans will see plenty of characters they know and love, now with updated graphics. You will also get to play a range of playable characters such as Tifa, Barret, and more to battle against enemies.
The game mechanics have been given a shake up, meaning its stepping away from the original turn-based combat system concentrating on action. Instead, it combines both real-time action with exploration and battle. The updated Active Time Battle system or ATB let’s you queue up moves for each member of your party. This includes abilities, spells, summons, items and limit breaks.
The remake sets to offer both veterans and newer players an engaging experience, with three modes to choose from including Easy, Normal and Classic. If you’re not keen on completely taking charge of all combat, you can always choose Classic mode.
Final Fantasy 7 Remakereleases on April 10th on Playstation 4.
